Benefits Counseling
Benefits Counseling is available through the Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging to provide information and assistance concerning health insurance options, public benefits, and entitlements. Help is offered for persons 60 years and older and to Medicare beneficiaries of any age. Benefits Counselors can also provide intervention and advocacy when it is needed, and have access to advice from lawyers who staff the Legal Hotline for Older Texans.
Services are primarily provided by certified BVAAA staff and volunteers that assist the Older Texans in claiming various public and private benefits to which they may be entitled. Service priorities include awareness, understanding of, and access to private and public benefits. Benefits Counselors confer with clients over the telephone, in the office, or will make home visits where it is more convenient for the client.
A combination of benefit counseling services, HICAP, and referrals to formal attorney-based legal services focus on these priority issues:
- Medicare Part "D"
- Health Insurance
- Consumer Rights
- Medical Entitlements
- Planning/Protecting Autonomy
- Individual Rights
