Brazos Valley's first regional hazard mitigation plan, Mitigating Risk: Protecting the Brazos Valley from All Hazards, was approved and adopted in 2005.

Hazard Mitigation

The Brazos Valley’s first regional hazard mitigation plan, Mitigating Risk: Protecting the Brazos Valley from All Hazards, was approved and adopted in 2005. This document was prepared by thirty-three cities and counties with the support of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments (BVCOG) and its contractor, H2O Partners, Inc. of Austin, Texas.

The Plan serves as a five-year blueprint for the future, aimed at making communities in the Brazos Valley disaster resistant by reducing or eliminating the long-term risk of loss of life and property from the full range of natural and man-made disasters. It meets the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (P.L. 106-390); Section 44 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 206; and State of Texas Division of Emergency Management standards. An open public process was established to provide multiple opportunities for all sectors in the Brazos Valley to become involved in the planning process and make input during its drafting stage.

The Plan identifies and assesses the potential impact of natural and man-made hazards that threaten the Brazos Valley region. BVCOG is now working to complete an update of the regional plan by partnering with the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). BVCOG and TEEX staffs have attended several meetings since April 2010 in an effort to gather local data and solicit input from the public.

Brazos County Hazard Mitigation Plan

We recently received our grant award notice from the Texas Division of Emergency Management for our Hazard Mitigation Planning Grant.  Therefore, we will work towards completing our data gathering phase of the project and soon begin work on the initial draft of the plan.
